Whether it’s for work, study or for your own personal life, being able to type, and to be able to type quickly, is a life-skill, something that will benefit you always. In my line of work, it is essential that I can quickly document the situation that my customer is facing, to be able to quickly search for solutions, to be able to quickly send an e-mail or post an instant message to my colleagues for assistance. It amazes me that there are still so many “Chicken” (Hunt and Peck) or “Biblical” (Seek and you will find) typists when there are so many free resources available to build up this skill.
There are many `traditional’ “how to type” training sites on the Internet. One such is TypingWeb, which allows you to setup a free account, and walk through several typing tutor and keyboarding tutorials to help you learn the basics such as finger placement, home keys, and the like. You can even get an official certification of your typing prowess, something would be a useful addition to your resume. Now, as the old TV ad says “It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen” – you will need to commit to some regular work to see an improvement.
However, if you know the basics, and can type reasonably well, you can head over to Ztype. This is a fun little web application that is a “Space Invaders” style of game where you have to ‘type’ the invaders out of the sky. Have a few tries, then share your high score with your workmates, your friends and family, and even here in the comments.
